PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - Over one thousand delegates representing over one hundred Justice Officials from throughout the world attended the annual Interpol general assembly this year.

This year's meeting took place in Rome from November 5th through to the 8th.

That is according to Minister with the responsibility for Justice, Roland Duncan, who headed a small delegation to the meeting.

During the General Assembly, representatives elected a lady from France to the position of president of Interpol.

It was the first time in the organization's history that a woman was elected to the position.

On the first day of the conference in Rome, during a ministerial meeting, members voted unanimously on a declaration entitled "The Outcome Declaration."

Speaking at the weekly Council of Ministers press briefing on Wednesday, the Justice Minister and in giving an outline of the signed declaration at the general conference, Minister Roland Duncan indicated that during the ministerial session, the issue of crime took center stage.

Justice Ministers in attendance were also able to agree on a joint cooperation aimed at the combating of violence.

"For St. Maarten that means that we will take along these proposals, suggestions and extra ideas we have picked up and documented and try to implement them here to try to make the island safer," the Justice Minister told journalists at the weekly press conference on Wednesday.
